Tokaido, Utsunoya, from the series "Selection of Views of the Tokaido (Tokaido fukei senshu)"
by Kawase Hasui

by Kawase Hasui
From the Selection of Views of Japan series — a curated group of Hasui's most praised regional subjects. Series membership adds collector appeal beyond that of standalone compositions. Pre-war lifetime editions with the Watanabe copyright seal (A–D types) represent the most desirable impressions; atmospheric subjects (snow, rain, night) within this series command the highest prices. Postwar lifetime editions (1946–1957) bearing the small 6mm J-seal represent authentic lifetime impressions but from the artist's final decade.
Tokaido, Utsunoya, from the Selection of Views of the Tokaido published in 1947, depicts the Utsunoya mountain pass in Shizuoka Prefecture — one of the steepest sections of the old Tokaido route, where the highway climbed through a densely forested gorge carved by streams descending from the Abe mountains. The dark cedar and cypress forest of Utsunoya, combined with the old stone-paved road winding through the pass, creates one of the Tokaido series' most atmospheric mountain subjects. The 1947 postwar date gives this celebration of a historic highway a reflective quality.
