Yakumo Bridge at the Nagata Shrine, Kobe, from the series "Collection of Scenic Views of Japan II, Kainsai Edition" (Nihon fukei shu II Kansai hen, Kobe Nagata jinja Yakumobashi)
by Kawase Hasui

by Kawase Hasui
From the Collection of Scenic Views of Japan series — Hasui's most extensive documented series, covering regional landscapes across the entire country. These prints document local sites that often saw little representation in earlier ukiyo-e, giving them documentary as well as artistic value. Snow scenes within this collection (like Saishoin Temple in the Snow, $3,000 at Artelino 2023) command significant premiums. Pre-war lifetime editions bearing the Watanabe copyright seal (A through G types, 1926–1944) are the most desirable.
Yakumo Bridge at Nagata Shrine in Kobe spans a small canal in the shrine's grounds, the elegant stone bridge with its simple railing reflected in the still canal water below. This October 1934 print from the Collection of Scenic Views of Japan II, Kansai Edition shows the bridge within the shrine precinct, framed by the shrine's stone lanterns and the Nagata Shrine's distinctive architectural elements. The bridge-within-shrine-grounds subject was a refined subset of Hasui's bridge composition genre.
