by Kawase Hasui

by Kawase Hasui
The Souvenirs of Travel series (First, Second, and Third Series, 1919–1922) represents Hasui's earliest major publishing relationship with Watanabe Shozaburo. Pre-earthquake impressions (before September 1923) are the rarest — the Kanto Earthquake destroyed Watanabe's workshop and most original blocks, making surviving early round-seal impressions exceptionally valuable at $2,500–$8,000. Post-earthquake editions were printed from recut blocks and trade at lower prices.
Yuhi Falls at Shiobara in Tochigi Prefecture is one of the waterfalls in the Houki River gorge that gives Shiobara Onsen its dramatic setting. This 1920 oban from the Souvenirs of Travel, First Series shows the falls early in Hasui's career — the white water cascade against dark volcanic rock, surrounded by the deep forest of the Shiobara gorge. The Shiobara series was one of Hasui's first extended treatments of a single onsen area, establishing his practice of depicting hot spring resorts through multiple compositions.
