Description
Matsushima (松島, Pine Islands) in Miyagi Prefecture is counted among Japan's three classical scenic views (Nihon sankei) alongside Amanohashidate and Miyajima. The bay contains several hundred small rocky islands, many crowned with wind-shaped Japanese black pines. Zaimokujima (材木島, Lumber Island) is among the more distinctive, rising from the bay in columnar rock formations that give it its name. Hasui's depiction shows the rocky outcrop with its pines reflected in calm bay waters, likely under the atmospheric conditions—morning mist, overcast sky, or evening light—that characterize his meisho-e approach. The flatness of the bay surface and the silhouetted pine forms provide strong horizontal and vertical compositional elements. The subject connects to a long tradition of Matsushima imagery in Japanese art, from medieval poetry through Hiroshige's landscape prints.
