Number 19 in the One Hundred Views of Great Tokyo series records the autumn festival at Yasukuni Shrine in Kudan, Chiyoda. The shrine's festivals drew large crowds to its broad approach and inner precincts, and Koizumi's composition likely captures the lantern-lit atmosphere of the Mitama Matsuri or autumn reitaisai among the shrine's cryptomeria-lined paths. As a self-carving and self-printing artist working in the [sosaku-hanga](/glossary/sosaku-hanga) tradition, Koizumi would have controlled every tonal gradation in the rendering of night light against the wooden structures. The festival subject allowed him to balance architectural forms — the distinctive torii and haiden — against the movement and color of celebrants, contrasting static sacred geometry with festive human activity characteristic of [meisho-e](/glossary/meisho-e) subject matter.
