Description
ASA NO KAWA GOSHOKU — "Five Colors of Morning River" — is one of Maeda Masao's landscape series prints, the bold sosaku-hanga title suggesting a compositional exploration of the chromatic range visible in a river scene at dawn, when the morning light produces the maximum tonal variety on water surface, bank, and reflected sky. Maeda's interest in color as both descriptive and compositional element found expression in landscape series where the same motif was examined in different chromatic conditions, the five-color title suggesting a systematic approach to the morning palette.
