Description
The crater lake at Mount Zao in Miyagi and Yamagata Prefectures — the active volcanic caldron whose acidic emerald-green waters are among the most visually extraordinary in Japan — is the subject of this 1958 color woodblock print. Maeda Masao's treatment of the Zao crater lake brings his characteristic bold line work and flat color to a subject of elemental geological drama, the vivid green of the acidic water contrasting with the volcanic rock and steam that surround it. The 1958 date places this in his mature period, when his landscape prints were achieving maximum formal clarity.
