Description

The Hori River at Matsue — the canal-crossed "Water City" in Shimane Prefecture where the castle and its moat connect to a system of waterways running through the historic urban fabric — is depicted here in one of Maeda Masao's western Japan landscape subjects. Matsue's water geography, shaped by its position between Lake Shinji and the castle hill, gave the city a particular character that appealed to landscape printmakers, and the Hori River's canal system provided intimate water-level views of the traditional architecture lining its banks.
