Description
Lake Okotanpe (Okotanpe-ko) is a small, intensely blue volcanic lake deep in the forests of central Hokkaido, accessible only by difficult trail and known for its exceptional clarity and the dramatic color contrast between its vivid blue water and the surrounding dark conifer forest. Maeda Masao's 1963 color woodblock print of this remote Hokkaido lake reflects his deep knowledge of and attachment to the landscape of his native island, his sosaku-hanga technique capturing the lake's intense color and isolated wilderness character with the directness of a printmaker who carved his own blocks.
