Description
Lake Shore in the Morning (湖畔の朝) depicts the early morning atmosphere of a Japanese lakeside — the calm water before wind rises, the mist that often hangs over mountain lakes in the hours after dawn, the particular quality of morning light reflected from the still surface. Maeda Masao's treatment of this classic landscape subject brings his bold graphic line to a theme whose atmospheric qualities might seem more suited to the gradated printing of shin-hanga, but his direct approach finds a graphic equivalent for morning stillness in the clarity and precision of his carved line.
