Description
SANSUI (landscape) — the classical Chinese and Japanese term for landscape painting, literally "mountain and water" — may represent either a specific landscape composition or a work that self-consciously engages with the sansui tradition as genre. Maeda Masao's relationship to the sansui tradition was complex: his sosaku-hanga practice was shaped by both the Japanese ink painting legacy (which included sansui as a major category) and the Western modernist influences he absorbed, and a print titled SANSUI may be both a landscape subject and a meditation on that subject's canonical status.
