$500–$4,000. Common landscapes: $500–$1,500. Key value factors: Maeda Masao's atmospheric mountain and landscape prints have a dedicated following among sosaku-hanga collectors.
View of Nakajima in Autumn — the small island and its surrounding pond in Nakajima Park, Sapporo, seen in the autumn foliage season when the maples and ginkgo trees turn gold and red — is one of Maeda Masao's seasonal Hokkaido subjects. The autumn foliage season (kōyō) was among the most celebrated in Japanese aesthetics, and Sapporo's parks offered a more northern version of the maple-viewing tradition that was better established in the ancient capital's famous gardens. Maeda's direct graphic style gave the autumn colors a bold clarity appropriate to the season's visual intensity.
