Hanzenji—a small sub-temple tucked within Kyoto's vast temple precincts—offered Saito the kind of architectural intimacy he loved: weathered wood, a moss-covered wall, a gate that opened onto nothing grand but simply another layer of quiet. His prints of lesser-known Kyoto sites carry a different feeling than those of celebrated landmarks; the absence of tourist familiarity frees him to pursue pure form without the weight of expectation.
