Myoshinji, the massive Rinzai Zen temple complex in northwest Kyoto—a city within a city, containing forty-seven sub-temples spread across a large precinct—was among Saito's most studied architectural environments. The Kyoto (C) variant focuses on a specific building or garden within the complex, possibly the famous dry garden at one of the major sub-temples, its geometric arrangement of raked gravel and stone offering the kind of pure compositional subject that most aligned with his formal preoccupations.
