落柿舎 京都
Rakuto is a general term for the eastern hills districts of Kyoto, home to dozens of smaller temples and gardens less visited than the major sites. Saito's 1961 print engages with the quieter architectural character of these spaces—smaller gates, stone-paved approaches, the particular quality of autumn light filtering through maple canopies—rendered in his signature flat planes. The work belongs to a sustained investigation of Kyoto's secondary precincts that parallels his more famous treatments of Ryoanji and Kinkakuji.
