The 1954 Ryoanji, Kyoto (A) was among Saito's earliest treatments of the famous rock garden, made in the year he was establishing himself as a major [sosaku-hanga](/glossary/sosaku-hanga) artist. At this date his geometric approach was already developed but still retained slightly more detail than the maximum reduction of his late style. The (A) designation marks it as the first of multiple Ryoanji compositions, the beginning of a conversation with one of Japan's most formally compelling spaces that he would continue across decades.
