The Shujaku Gate at Sanzenin, Kyoto—the great Tendai temple in the mountains of Ohara north of the city—presents one of Kyoto's most remote and atmospheric religious sites, its mountain location giving it a different quality from the lowland temples. Saito's rendering of the gate would emphasize its massive timber construction, the oversized tile capping of its hipped roof, the way it organizes the approach to the inner precinct through controlled revelation.
