Wall of Kyoto (A) from 1960 focuses on the characteristic boundary surface of the old city—plastered or stone walls enclosing temple precincts, private gardens, and machiya compounds that create Kyoto's distinctive street character. Saito found in these walls a subject of pure surface: the texture of old plaster, the capping tiles, the occasional glimpse of garden vegetation above the wall top, organized into a composition where surface itself becomes content. The (A) variant is the primary version of what became a paired series.
