Description
After A Bath, or Yuagari in Japanese, depicts a woman in the moments following a bath, a subject with deep roots in the bijin-ga tradition. The figure exists in a state of unguarded ease, her body still warm, her posture relaxed in a way that formal portraiture would never permit. Iwata treats this intimate moment with the frank tenderness that distinguishes shin-hanga depictions of bathing from their ukiyo-e predecessors. The oban woodblock format gives the scene a generous scale, allowing the artist to render the subtle flush of warm skin and the damp weight of loosened hair.
