Description
A gnarled pine tree frames the right side of the composition, its thick trunk and twisting branches silhouetted against a pale crescent moon and drifting clouds. Beyond the tree, small pine-covered islets sit in a bay whose calm water reflects the moonlight in streaks of pale yellow, set against deep blue-black tones for the sky and sea. The overall palette is dominated by indigo and blue-gray, giving the harbor scene a quiet, nocturnal mood. Woodblock print, "Moon at Matsushima," Shiro Kasamatsu.
