Snow and night scenes traditionally command higher prices. Key value factors: As self-carved and self-printed works, sosaku-hanga value is tied to the artist's reputation and edition size. Larger formats, earlier editions, and historically significant works command the highest prices.
A ferry at Akabane in northern Tokyo crosses a waterway in snowfall, the flat-bottomed boat piled with passengers and freight while snow falls on the river and the low banks. The Akabane ferry was part of the complex water-transport network that served Tokyo before modern bridges made such crossings obsolete, and Henmi's rendering of it in snow creates a composition of particular graphic intensity — white snowfall against dark water and the silhouettes of figures in winter clothing.
