Snow and night scenes traditionally command higher prices. Key value factors: As self-carved and self-printed works, sosaku-hanga value is tied to the artist's reputation and edition size. Larger formats, earlier editions, and historically significant works command the highest prices.
The Okuirise area — upper Oirase — is depicted in deep winter, the stream running beneath ice and snow, the forest bare and laden with frost. Henmi's winter treatments of this landscape explore the opposite extreme from his spring compositions of the same place: all the lush growth stripped away, the essential structure of rock, water, and bare tree revealed beneath the snow. The winter Oirase subjects demand graphic solutions for depicting ice and frozen motion in a medium that is itself static.
