Description
A snow scene from 2002 — the dating unusual given that Henmi died in 1944, suggesting this may be a posthumous edition, a misdating, or a work by a different artist sharing a name. If attributed in error, the snow subject at least places the print within the aesthetic territory of Henmi's sosaku-hanga snow compositions, which were among his most celebrated. Snow subjects dominated the Japanese printmaking tradition as vehicles for exploring white space, atmospheric graduation, and the quieting of the visual world that winter snow brings.
