Snow and night scenes traditionally command higher prices. Key value factors: As self-carved and self-printed works, sosaku-hanga value is tied to the artist's reputation and edition size. Larger formats, earlier editions, and historically significant works command the highest prices.
Spring snow at Kamikochi (or the related highland at Jokochi) in Nagano prefecture — the mountain resort and nature preserve where late spring snowfall was a regular occurrence, the alpine altitude keeping winter conditions well into the season that the lowlands had already left behind. Spring snow at Kamikochi created a visual experience of considerable drama: fresh green shoots of spring vegetation pushing through the snow, the clarity of spring light on a white landscape. Henmi's rendering captures this overlap of seasons in the Japanese highlands.
