An alternate rendering of Chion-in Temple in winter, this version may depict a different vantage point or snowfall intensity compared to the companion print. Prices generally fall between $150-$500. Collectors familiar with both editions note subtle differences in the depth of snow coverage and the treatment of the temple roofline.
Snow at Chion-in Temple, dated to the early 1950s, is likely a companion work to or variant of Asano's broader engagement with the great Higashiyama temple in winter conditions. The Chion-in complex, with its extraordinary mountain gate and the broad stone steps leading up to it, provided him with multiple compositional possibilities for depicting snow's transformation of a familiar architectural environment. In this ca. 1950s version, the atmospheric qualities of winter light and snowfall are rendered with the warmth that characterized his mature printmaking style.
