Description
Kitano Tenmangu Shrine in Kyoto's Kamigyo district — dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the great scholar and politician deified as Tenjin after his death in political exile — is depicted in early spring in this Tokuriki composition, the shrine's famous plum orchard just beginning to open. The early spring setting, with the plum blossoms as the first announcement of the changing season, reflects Tokuriki's attention to the seasonal character of Kyoto's sacred sites. Kitano Tenmangu's plum garden was among the first seasonal destinations of the Kyoto year.
