One of Koitsu's most iconic subjects. First editions from the 1930s Doi Hangaten series command the strongest premiums; his "Ginza in Rain" achieved $19,050 at Christie's in 2025.
Futarasan Shrine, one of Nikko's three principal shrines and a UNESCO World Heritage site, stands at the spiritual heart of the sacred mountain complex. Koitsu's 1930 print renders the shrine's ornate gate structure in the deep forest setting that gives Nikko its particular character — architecture and ancient woodland in continuous dialogue. The [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) sky gradation above the cryptomeria canopy suggests the spiritual elevation of the mountain shrine, removed from the ordinary world below.
