Hiroshige produced an estimated 8,000 designs over his 40-year career, making him one of the most prolific masters of ukiyo-e. His market has strengthened significantly in recent years, with the 2025 Sotheby's Paris record of $2.4M and growing international collector interest.
The climactic night raid in Act 11 of the Chushingura — the moment when the forty-seven ronin carry out their long-planned revenge on Lord Kira — is depicted in this scene from a Chushingura series. The attack on the Kira compound in the middle of winter, December 1702, is one of the most dramatized events in Japanese history. Hiroshige's version captures the dramatic moment without the elaborate staging typical of kabuki theater representations.
