Description
The great torii of Itsukushima Shrine stands in the waters of the Seto Inland Sea at Miyajima while sailing boats pass nearby, their white sails catching the wind against the island's forested hills in this seascape by Yuhan Ito. The combination of the floating gate and working sailboats places the sacred and the everyday in the same frame, the torii's vermillion columns rising from the same water that carries the fishermen's boats. Ito's calm, atmospheric treatment finds the harmony between these two presences.
