Description
The Asama Shrine referred to here is almost certainly Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha in Fujinomiya, Shizuoka Prefecture, one of the principal shrines dedicated to the deity of Mount Fuji and historically the starting point for Fuji pilgrims ascending the mountain's southern slope. The shrine is set within a primeval forest of towering Japanese cedar, and Hasui's composition likely exploits the dramatic vertical scale of the cryptomeria-lined approach, the vermillion torii gates, and the ornate karamon of the main hall. Whether Fuji itself appears in the background or is implied by context, the shrine's close relationship with the mountain pervades the image. Hasui's treatment of dense cedar forests—building deep shadow through layered dark greens and ink blacks—contrasts effectively with the bright lacquered shrine architecture. The composition is a characteristic meisho-e subject rendered in shin-hanga style.
