Description
This print depicts Chusonji, the historic Tendai Buddhist temple complex in Hiraizumi, Iwate Prefecture, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its Heian-period architecture. Hasui's composition likely features the approach to the complex through towering sugi (Japanese cedar) trees, a setting that creates dramatic vertical elements and filtered light effects well-suited to woodblock gradation. The dense forest canopy along the main approach path, Tsukimizaka, has long been a visual emblem of the site. Hasui would have exploited the tonal contrast between the dark cedar trunks and the pale ground to structure the composition. The stillness and age of the site align with his broader interest in historically significant Japanese landscapes and sacred spaces.
