Chongseokjeong, from the series "Eight Views of Korea" (Chosen hakkei, Sosekitei)
by Kawase Hasui

by Kawase Hasui
From Hasui's Eight Views of Korea or Korean Views Supplement — among his rarest subjects geographically. Korean landscapes represent a small but dedicated collecting niche, with particular interest from Korean and Korean-American buyers as well as scholars of Japanese colonial-era art. These prints are substantially rarer at auction than his Japanese subjects and can command unexpected premiums when the right buyer is present. Pre-war lifetime editions bearing the Watanabe copyright seal (A through G types, 1926–1944) are the most desirable.
Chongseokjeong, from the Eight Views of Korea series published in October 1939, depicts the extraordinary basalt column formation on the Gangwon coast near present-day Goseong — a natural wonder where hexagonal lava columns rise directly from the sea, their geometric regularity creating a landscape of almost architectural precision. The pavilion Chongseokjeong, perched above the columns, has overlooked this geological spectacle since the Goryeo period, and Hasui's composition likely captures both the pavilion and the wave-washed column formations below. The Eight Views series brought Hasui's atmospheric compositional intelligence to the most celebrated landscapes of the Korean peninsula.
