Description
Sekiyado, a historic post-town on the Edo River in what is now Noda City, Chiba Prefecture, appears here in the aftermath of a snowfall. The town's position at a river crossing made it a subject of visual interest: waterways, low embankments, and wooden architecture accumulate snow in visually distinct ways. Hasui likely composed this scene from the riverbank looking across the water at whitened rooftops and bare willows or persimmon trees against a pale clearing sky. The Edo River, flat and broad, would reflect the sky's color during clearing light. Characteristic of his meisho-e (famous-place pictures) tradition, this print records a specific regional landscape while transforming it through careful attention to atmospheric light. The print fits within Hasui's extensive survey of lesser-known provincial towns.
