Description
Godaido is a small hexagonal Buddhist hall built on a rocky islet in Matsushima Bay, connected to shore by two short arched bridges and commissioned by Date Masamune in 1604. Its distinctive copper-roofed form rising from the sea became one of the most recognized architectural subjects in Tohoku printmaking. Hasui's snow view places the intimate hall under winter accumulation, the steeply pitched roof loaded with white against a gray sea and pale winter sky. Snow rendering in woodblock required careful management of reserved areas: Hasui and his printers achieved the dense mass of accumulated snow by relying on the natural tone of the washi rather than applied pigment, with karazuri (blind embossing) used selectively to suggest surface texture and depth. The surrounding pine-covered islets of Matsushima Bay, rendered in dark ink silhouette, frame the snow-laden temple with the compositional vocabulary of classical Japanese winter landscape. The combination of architectural subject, snow, and the celebrated Matsushima scenery made this a compelling addition to Hasui's eastern Japan series.
