Description
Evening Rain at a Lakeside Tearoom comes from Kawase Hasui's 1935 series Collection of Views of the Moto-Hakone Minami Mountain Villa (Moto-Hakone Minami sanso fukei shu), now in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. The series departed from Kawase Hasui's usual nationally scaled landscape sets to focus on a single private estate at Moto-Hakone, beside Lake Ashi in the Hakone region. The woodblock print shows a wooden tearoom set at the water's edge as rain falls in slender diagonal lines, the lake surface broken by the wind and the surrounding hills veiled in mist. The image relies on the printing techniques that Watanabe Shozaburo's workshop had developed for the shin-hanga, or new prints, movement, including overlapping bokashi gradations for the rainy sky and very fine carved lines for the rain itself. The Moto-Hakone Minami sanso series was a more intimate commission than Hasui's regional editions, but the artist approached it with the same care he brought to public landmarks, treating the tearoom and its setting as a microcosm of Japanese garden aesthetics. Working with the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo, Kawase Hasui used the format to combine architecture, water, weather, and seasonal mood in a tightly framed composition. The combination of evening light, soft rain, and a quietly empty tearoom gives the print the contemplative, atmospheric quality that collectors associated with Hasui's mature work and that helped to define the broader shin-hanga aesthetic developed under Watanabe Shozaburo's leadership.
