Description
The Byōdōin, the eleventh-century Amida hall in Uji, Kyoto Prefecture, is depicted here under evening snowfall, its iconic Phoenix Hall silhouetted or rendered in detail against a snow-laden sky and the still Uji River. Hasui treated snow with particular technical sophistication, often leaving areas of washi unpigmented to suggest accumulated snow on rooftops and branches while applying layered grey and blue bokashi in the sky. The Byōdōin's bilateral symmetry and its reflection in the pond before the hall provide a compositional anchor for the atmospheric effects surrounding it. This subject appears in Hasui's Kyoto travel subjects, where historic architecture under seasonal weather conditions was a standard format. The print participates in the category of yukimi, or snow-viewing imagery, for which Hasui earned particular critical recognition.
