Description
Kasuga Taisha, a Shinto shrine established in 768 CE in Nara, is distinguished by its thousands of bronze and stone lanterns lining the approaches and hanging from the shrine buildings — a visual characteristic that made it a recurring subject for artists. Hasui's depiction of the front gate likely renders the vermillion-lacquered wooden architecture against the dense cedar forest surrounding the shrine precinct, with the stone lanterns' worn surfaces providing textural counterpoint to the architectural elements. The Nara deer sacred to the shrine may appear as figures in the approach. If rendered at dusk or dawn, the lanterns' glow would provide warm tonal accents within the predominantly green and grey composition. The print belongs to Hasui's extensive documentation of Japan's historic religious architecture as meisho-e subjects, combining cultural landmark imagery with his characteristic atmospheric light.
