Description
This print depicts Tokyo's Ginza district under snowfall or in the immediate aftermath of a snowstorm, placing Hasui's signature meteorological interest within an urban commercial context. The Ginza—the most modernized street corridor in early twentieth-century Tokyo, lined with brick and Western-style buildings—provided a subject distinct from his rural landscape work and allowed him to address the transformation of Japan's urban fabric. Snow scenes were among Hasui's most technically accomplished and commercially successful subjects, requiring precise gradation to differentiate falling snow, accumulated white on horizontal surfaces, and the wet reflections of lamplit pavement. The composition likely employs a low viewpoint looking down the street, with the illuminated shop fronts and electric streetlights creating pools of warm color against the cool gray-white of the snow. Human figures, reduced to small silhouettes beneath umbrellas, would provide scale and movement without interrupting the overall stillness of the scene.
