Description
A companion or variant version to Hasui's other Kikoji Temple composition, this print depicts the same Nara temple site and likely represents either a different edition of the same design or a closely related composition made from a different vantage point or in a different season. Nara's historic temple compounds provided Hasui with architectural subjects set within naturalistic grounds that lacked the urban density of Tokyo's temple districts. The mellow light available at Nara — the city sits in a shallow basin surrounded by forested hills — contributed to the subdued tonal range that characterizes Hasui's architectural landscapes. Printed on oban-format washi, the composition would use a limited but precisely chosen palette to render aged timber, ceramic roof tiles, stone, and seasonal vegetation. The temple's garden or approach path may appear in the foreground, giving spatial recession to an otherwise architecturally dominated composition. Hasui's colophon and the publisher's seal would typically appear in a lower corner of the printed sheet.
