Description
Among the cluster of prints Hasui dedicated to Kinkakuji under winter conditions, this composition shows the three-story Shariden pavilion against a quiet snow sky, its image doubled in the reflective surface of Kyoko-chi. Garden pines characteristic of the Rokuon-ji grounds carry snow on their spreading branches, and the stone and moss surfaces of the surrounding garden disappear under uniform white coverage. Hasui's technical mastery of the snow-scene genre, which brought him the informal title 'Artist of Snow,' is evident in the tonal gradations that distinguish compressed snow shadows from open lit surfaces. The interplay between the pavilion's dark lacquered second story and the gold upper tier creates the central color tension within an otherwise cool-hued winter palette.
