Description
Miyajima (Itsukushima Island) in Hiroshima Bay is among Japan's most celebrated scenic sites, home to the Itsukushima Shrine and its iconic vermillion torii gate standing in the tidal flats. Hasui's lingering snow composition at Miyajima likely shows the torii and shrine buildings under a blanket of residual snow, the vermillion columns creating a strong color contrast against white accumulation and a grey-blue winter sea. Snow at Miyajima is relatively rare, lending such compositions a sense of seasonal exception. The shrine's distinctive architecture — built on wooden piles over the water — provides strong horizontal and vertical geometry that Hasui would have organized against the open expanse of bay and sky.
