Description
A close companion to other snow-at-Miyajima compositions in Hasui's output, this print depicts Itsukushima Shrine's architecture under accumulated snow, likely representing either a distinct compositional viewpoint or a variant impression of a related design. The Itsukushima precinct's network of covered corridors, lanterns, and roofed stages over tidal water allowed Hasui to construct a layered depth of field moving from foreground water through middle-ground architecture to the snow-covered wooded slopes of Mount Misen behind. The shin-hanga production process — with Hasui providing a detailed watercolor sketch, the carver (eshi) transferring it to cherry-wood blocks, and skilled printers (surishi) executing the pigment applications — allowed for precise tonal control across the full range from the bright white of snow to the deep darks of wet timber and winter water. The vermillion lacquer of the shrine structure, retained even in snow-scene prints, provides the warm chromatic accent against which the cold gray-white surroundings are measured.
