Description
Genzoji Temple in Saitama Prefecture is the subject of this shin-hanga landscape, one of Hasui's studies of lesser-known regional religious sites that complemented his more celebrated views of Kyoto, Nikko, and the Tokaido. The composition likely presents the temple precinct with architectural elements — a gate, stone lanterns, or a bell tower — integrated into a naturalistic setting of mature trees and seasonal foliage. Hasui's outdoor sketching practice informed the specificity of each site, distinguishing these regional prints from generic temple imagery. The print is produced in the oban format standard to Hasui's Watanabe-published landscape series, with pigments layered in sequence to build atmospheric depth. The question marks in the Japanese title indicate that certain characters in the original inscription remain unconfirmed in scholarship.
