Description
This print of Nigatsu-dō at Nara focuses on the temple hall itself rather than its landscape setting, bringing the viewer closer to the architectural subject. Nigatsu-dō's veranda, supported by a network of wooden posts over the hillside, is one of the most structurally distinctive features of the Nara temple complex, and Hasui's key-block carving of its timber framework would require careful geometric precision alongside the softer tonal work of the color blocks. The composition may show the hall from the approach path, with stone lanterns and cedar trees framing the main structure against open sky. Evening or early-morning light would concentrate the printer's gradation work in the sky area while leaving architectural surfaces in relatively flat, accurate color. The subject connects to Hasui's broader documentation of Buddhist and Shinto architecture during a period of growing interest in historic preservation.
