Description
This print pairs two of Hasui's recurring compositional elements: a Buddhist pagoda and still water offering a mirror reflection. Unlike his stormy coastal scenes, the presence of a pond suggests a calmer and more contemplative atmosphere — likely a temple garden or parkland setting. The reflection motif, a recurring device in Hasui's compositional vocabulary, required precise block registration so that the pagoda's vertical lines aligned correctly with their inverted image on the water surface. Hasui used such doublings to explore the relationship between solid structure and transient water, permanence and flux. The palette would feature cool blues and greens for the water surface, with autumnal or verdant tones in the surrounding foliage depending on season. The pagoda itself, rendered in warm ochres and greys, anchors the composition vertically while its wavering reflection introduces instability below. Printed by Watanabe Shōzaburō's workshop on washi, subtle textural printing distinguishes the water's surface from flat color areas elsewhere in the design.
