Description
The primary edition in Hasui's group of pagoda-in-snow designs, this print presents a multi-storied pagoda in winter. The composition relies on the restraint characteristic of Hasui's snow scenes: the unprinted or lightly washed washi paper surface renders fallen snow, while cool bokashi gradations across the sky establish the cold, still air of a winter scene. Hasui's draftsmanship, developed through sustained travel sketching, gives the pagoda precise architectural character—the curvature of the tiled eaves, the bracketing beneath each story, the taper toward the pinnacle—within an atmospheric setting that prioritizes mood over topographic specificity. The shin-hanga production process enabled fine tonal layering that distinguishes the print from the broader ukiyo-e tradition in its sensitivity to atmosphere over decorative pattern.
