Description
A composition featuring multiple pine trees in the aftermath of snowfall, this print uses the overlapping of trunks and the varied disposition of snow-covered branches to build a sense of depth across the picture plane. Hasui's characteristic approach to winter landscapes eschews narrative incident—no travelers, no temple bells—in favor of pure atmospheric observation. The falling or recently settled snow creates a stillness that the composition amplifies through horizontal bands of snow-covered ground contrasting with vertical trunks. Printed using multiple woodblocks on dampened washi, the design required careful coordination between the carver and printer to achieve the soft tonal transitions in the sky and the crisp definition of individual needles and branch tips visible against the pale ground.
