Description
Hasui's depiction of the Postal Life Insurance Office in Tokyo places a prominent Meiji-era Western-style government building within the atmospheric conditions—likely evening light, rain, or winter—that he consistently applied to architectural subjects throughout his career. The building's symmetrical facade and regular fenestration offered a different compositional challenge than temple grounds or coastlines, requiring Hasui to find the quality of light or reflection that would transform a bureaucratic structure into a subject for meisho-e treatment. Reflections in wet pavement, figures at the entrance, or a dramatic sky would have animated what might otherwise be a documentary image. Published under the oversight of Watanabe Shozaburo, such urban architectural prints found audiences among both domestic collectors interested in a changing Tokyo and Western buyers drawn to the combination of modern subject and traditional technique.
