Description
A novelty print depicting the Western figure of Santa Claus within a snowy Japanese landscape. Hasui, who earned the epithet 'Artist of Snow' for his winter meisho-e, brought substantial technical skill to this commercial subject. His snow scenes are characterized by soft bokashi gradients on kozo-fiber washi that suggest falling or settled snow, accumulation on pine branches or thatched rooftops, and the muffled tonal atmosphere of a winter landscape under heavy cloud. The incorporation of a Santa figure—rendered in red against a white ground—points to production for the holiday greeting card market during the Showa period, when Western seasonal imagery had entered Japanese commercial print culture. Achieving the red-clad figure against the pale snow field required careful multi-block color registration, a technical challenge consistent with Watanabe atelier standards. The print sits at the intersection of Hasui's mastery of seasonal atmosphere and the era's cross-cultural commercial demand.
