Description
Sanzenin Temple at Ohara north of Kyoto is famous for its moss gardens and for its late-autumn atmosphere — the gardens are among the finest in Japan for contemplative moss-and-maple compositions. This 1949 print likely shows the temple's shoin and garden in autumn, the brilliant red and orange of the maple canopy reflected in the moss-covered ground or a small pond. Ohara's combination of remote mountain valley setting and refined garden culture made it one of Hasui's most atmospheric Kyoto-area subjects.
